Boxworks are cavities left behind when crystals dissolve. These cavities retain the shape of the dissolved mineral and thus provide information on its nature. The boxworks are often partially filled with later minerals (iron oxides, clays, etc.). The photo on the right shows a cubic boxwork of galena in an orange mimetite.
