In mineralogy, the term extinction designates the transition to black color of crystals in polarized-analyzed light both under a polariscope or on a polarizing microscope by rotating the stage. This phenomenon is characteristic of all anisotropic minerals. Isotropic minerals are always off, so appear black regardless of their orientation.
