What is mesostasis in geology ?

In volcanic rocks, the term mesostasis refers to the vitreous or very finely crystalline material filling the spaces between the crystals. To the naked eye, mesostasis often takes on the appearance of a homogeneous paste and only examination under a microscope can determine whether it is composed of microcrystals (microlites) or of glass.
