What is a rift in geology ?

Rift : definition

A rift designates a collapse ditch, located either in the middle of the oceanic ridges (oceanic rift) and through which the magma flows, or in a continental environment (continental rift) with a collapse basin (graben ) framed by raised borders (horsts), frequently associated with volcanic activity (Bassin de Limagne and Chaîne des Puys in France for example).
