In petrography, the term cement designates any consolidated material binding together mineral or rocky elements so as to result in a compact rock. Cement usually corresponds to a chemical precipitation (calcite, quartz, iron oxides...), as opposed to the matrix which is composed of detrital elements finer than the fragments. In the field of magmatic rocks, the terms mesostasis or paste are used.
