What is the streak in mineralogy ?

In mineralogy, the streak is the mineral dust left by a mineral or a rock on a white ceramic. The color of the streak is that of the mineral or the rock reduced to a powdery state; it is often different from that of the sample and constitutes a reliable determination criterion. For example, pyrite, which is yellow in color, leaves a greenish-black trace.
