This location must meet several criteria to be considered a type locality :

  • Original discovery : The type locality is the site where the mineral was first discovered or where its presence was decisively observed. This is where the first analyses were conducted.
  • Scientific identification : It is not enough for the mineral to have been found; it must also have been identified and its characteristics properly documented and published. This requires scientific validation of the discovery. 
  • Uniqueness or Representativeness : The type locality represents the original type of the mineral, meaning that the specimens from this locality must be those that define the criteria for this mineral. In other words, the characteristics observed in these specimens are those used for the classification of this mineral.

Why are type localities important ?

Type localities play a crucial role in mineralogical nomenclature and the scientific documentation of minerals. Their importance is evident in several aspects :

  • Reference for future studies : Once a mineral has been associated with a type locality, it becomes a benchmark for further research.
